Inscription

"Aulus Caecilius Rufus, the chief magistrate [duumvir]." Latin: A(ulus) Caeci(lius Ru)fus II vir.

Description

Portion of a larger monumental public inscription. This fragment preserves one complete letter and two partial letters from the middle of the honoree’s nomen (family/clan name).

Chisel marks are visible on the surface of the stone, revealing how it was first roughed out with toothed chisels before being worked more carefully with finer tools; apparently the first pass went a bit too deep on this inscription! The break on this stone connects with other pieces in our collection.
