Fragment (“A”) of inscription of a chief magistrate

Inscription
Description
Portion of a monumental public inscription preserving only one letter and an interpunct (a dot separating letters and/or words in ancient inscriptions). The edge to the left of the “A.” is straight and the back shows possible traces of attachment, suggesting that it is the beginning of the entire inscription. This would leave the “A.” standing on its own, suggesting it may be part of a name: “A.” was the standard abbreviation of “Aulus”, a common Roman praenomen (given/first name).
Chisel marks are visible on the surface of the stone, revealing how it was first roughed out with toothed chisels before being worked more carefully with finer tools; apparently the first pass went a bit too deep on this inscription! The break on this stone connects with other pieces in our collection, helping to confirm our reading of this fragment.

The downloadable files are in an .STL format which is optimal for 3D printing. We suggest using a free software such as Meshmixer to edit the file to your needs. Some objects may need supports added or should be hollowed out for the most efficient printing. Any questions about 3D printing should be directed to kelsey.disko.project@umich.edu.
