Description
This lamp from Egypt’s Fayoum region is testament to both continuity and change in the ancient Mediterranean. The greenish blue to dark blue glaze belongs to a family of similar-colored materials, often called “faience,” used in Egypt since the Predynastic Period (4000–3000 BCE); see the Late Dynastic ushabti figurine 0000.00.4645. But the lamp also bears motifs from the Christian religion that spread in Egypt in the first century CE: a raised inscription on both sides of the the rim reads “HAГIA TPIAϹ,” or “Holy Trinity,” and the concave upper surface, known as a discus, features a Greek cross in the middle of four small filling-holes.
