Tripod Pyxis
Object Information
7 cm H x 7.8 cm Diam
Description
This tripod pyxis is of the Corinthian style which is dated to ca. 575 BCE. A pyxis is a smaller vessel that is typically cylindrical in shape, has a lid, and does not have any handles. Pyxides were used to store things such as jewelry, cosmetics, perfumed oils, incense, and even medicine. The Corinthian style of pyxides are often identified by their geometric patterns as well as the coloring and consistency of the clay such as this one. This pyxis was gifted to the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology by the National Museum of Athens in 1933.
