Palmyra Woman Bust
Object Information
Description
This funerary portrait is of a woman from the city of Palmyra. Palmyra is well-known for this style of relief portraiture, and there are over 3,000 of these funerary reliefs existing today. These reliefs were most likely mass-produced in local workshops, and the final artistic details such as jewellry, clothing, hairstyle, and inscription were chosen by the deceased’s family at the time of purchase. These reliefs indicate a refined production economy and emphasize the individual’s choice in funerary representation for their family.

Some objects may need supports added or should be hollowed out for the most efficient printing. Any questions about 3D printing should be directed to kelsey.disko.project@umich.edu.
