Mummy Mask
Object Information
43 cm H x 26 cm W x 25 cm D
Description
Unlike cartonnage masks of the Ramesside Period, which were often custom-made with extremely personalized details, masks from the Late-Ptolemaic periods, such as this one, represent more abstract facial features. As an example of a mass-produced mask, it does not reflect the image of a specific person. The mask is made from cartonnage, a process in which successive layers of coarse linen were placed over a model, adjusted over its contours, then left to dry. A final layer of plaster would have been placed over it before the mask was gilded and painted. The eyes of the mask are similar to the fake canopic jar, KM 0000.08.8193, almond shaped with a cosmetic line emphasizing them. The mask also features a beaded “usech” collar with patterned relief, similar to those of other late-Ptolemaic and early Roman period masks.
