Description

The object is a cylindrical altar discovered in Karanis, Egypt. It is an example of what archaeologists call a “surface find,” meaning that it was found lying on top of the ground before excavation in the area. This is important because “surface finds” do not have a secure archaeological context, which means that this object cannot be dated with certainty. Despite the uncertain date of this object, altars maintained a similar function across time. Altars could be used in either funerary or religious practices by placing an offering on top of the altar. It is unclear if this altar was used in a public or domestic space. This altar is made out of carved out of yellow, calcareous stone, evidenced by numerous chisel marks.

The downloadable files are in an .STL format which is optimal for 3D printing. We suggest using a free software such as Meshmixer to edit the file to your needs. Some objects may need supports added or should be hollowed out for the most efficient printing. Any questions about 3D printing should be directed to kelsey.disko.project@umich.edu.
