Inscription

Latin: [E] [X] O F I [O] S E [A] [T] This maker's mark on this lamp is written by hand instead of stamped, and the missing piece makes the inscription illegible. The letters in bracketing are educated guesses by the conservators. The inscription is indicating the producer of the product, but this combination of letters does not match any known comparanda.

Description

This lamp is an example of a Roman relief lamp, a type of decorative lamp that features relief ornamentation on the body’s concave upper surface known as the discus. This particular type of lamp originated in ancient Italy but was later adopted and copied throughout the Mediterranean world. On this lamp’s discus, a male warrior appears to be in the thick of battle: he rides atop a galloping horse and protects himself with a giant shield.

Some objects may need supports added or should be hollowed out for the most efficient printing. Any questions about 3D printing should be directed to kelsey.disko.project@umich.edu.
