Description

This ceramic incantation bowl provides valuable insights into the mysterious realm of ancient Mesopotamian bowl magic. Unearthed alongside another incantation bowl and fragments of an inscribed eggshell, this artifact forms a significant double-bowl incantation set. Incantation bowls, typically made of ceramic due to its affordability and ease of inscription, served as stationary amuletic devices sought by individuals seeking protection from various afflictions. The bowls were intentionally buried in strategic locations, such as under thresholds or corners of rooms, symbolizing the entrapment of malevolent spirits and safeguarding against misfortunes. They were associated with supernatural intervention and were utilized across a wide range of religious traditions, including Judaism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Mandaeism, and Manichaeism. This particular bowl features a pseudo-script inscription, mimicking the Aramaic language, and intricate drawings on its interior surface. The drawings depict humanoid figures, likely representing evil entities captured or seized through the protective properties of the bowl. Notably, the companion bowl, found stacked above it and joined with bitumen, reveals a similar pseudo-script inscription and humanoid representations. The presence of an inscribed eggshell between the two bowls raises questions about its symbolic significance, possibly indicating the breaking of a curse.
