Description

This is a bronze figurine of the god Hermes. Hermes appears to be holding a large caduceus, or a herald’s staff, in his left hand, while holding a coin pouch in his right hand. The caduceus is a common object associated with Hermes, as it symbolized peace and their inviolability as messengers. The coin pouch is another object associated with the god because Hermes was the protector deity for travelers and merchants. Hermes’ winged helmet is also visible, and the figurine most likely had winged feet or sandals as well, although we are uncertain since the lower half of the figurine, below the knee, is missing. He is clothed in a chlamys, a type of Greek cloak, which is draped over both shoulders. This figurine could have been used for either domestic or public worship of the deity.

The downloadable files are in an .STL format which is optimal for 3D printing. We suggest using a free software such as Meshmixer to edit the file to your needs. Some objects may need supports added or should be hollowed out for the most efficient printing. Any questions about 3D printing should be directed to kelsey.disko.project@umich.edu.
