Description

This gold stater is a popular type that was produced during the reign of Philip II of Macedon (359–336 BCE), father of Alexander the Great, to celebrate his victories in the Olympic Games. The obverse of the coin features the god Apollo wearing a laurel wreath crown, while the reverse shows a charioteer participating in a horse race. Philip II won horse-racing events in 356, 352, and 348 BCE. This coin highlights his victory in 348 BCE in the biga, a horse-racing event involving two horses and a charioteer. These coins served as propaganda tools to emphasize not only the Macedonian king’s involvement in the Olympic Games but also to reinforce Macedonia’s place within the larger Panhellenic community. This coin type continued to be minted under his sons Alexander III (“the Great”) and Philip III Arrhidaeus in honor of their father’s victories.
