Description
This inscribed and decorated limestone slab is a funerary stela, or tombstone, for an Egyptian toddler named Protarchos. He lived sometime during the late 2nd century CE, and was from the ancient Egyptian town of Terenouthis. The most noteworthy feature of this stela is its incorporation of both Egyptian and Greek elements. For instance, the religious iconography displayed on the reliefs integrate existing motifs and forms found within both Egyptian and Greek canons. This is not all that surprising since Terenouthis was inhabited by both indigenous Egyptians and Greek settlers. The Greek inscription on the stela tells us that Protarchos was only a toddler when he died, reflecting the high child mortality rates that existed in the ancient world.
