Description

The Etruscan votive statuette of a woman illustrates the Etruscan taste for the archaic style, which lingered in some parts of Etruria (mainly in the north and northeast) long after it had gone out of fashion in central and southern areas. The large head and face, which exhibits large eyes and prominent nose, are features that can be traced back to the Villanovan period (9th – 8th centuries BCE). The figure wears Etruscan garments typical of the archaic period (6th – 5th c. BCE), including a pointed conical cap and shoes with pointed toes; the dress incised with lines and dots, typical of Villanovan art. This type of votive statuette is of a relatively rare type that is mainly found in the Umbrian region of Etruria. The best known example is from Perugia. Votive bronzes played an important part in Etruscan ritual practice. The alert posture and wide eyes of this statuette convey a vivid impression of a woman in the presence of a deity.
