Description

This is a mold-made ceramic figurine that possibly depicts a winged Eros on the back of a swan. Together, Eros and the swan skim over rippling blue water. Found in the Fayoum region of Egypt, the paint on this figurine is incredibly well-preserved. Conservators at the Kelsey Museum have found traces of white, blue, dark and pale purple, red, and orange coloring on the figurine. Eros and the swan may be connected to the myth of Leda and the Swan. Alternatively, it has also been suggested that the winged boy could be a depiction of the Roman Harpocrates, who is also often represented with a bird. Other terracotta figurines of Harpocrates with a goose have been excavated in the Fayoum.
