Description

This fragmented bust was excavated from the sanctuary of Aphrodite in Golgoi, Cyprus. According to some Alexandrian writers, the ancient city of Golgoi was one of the cult centers for the worship of Aphrodite. Carved from limestone, this bust is of a male figure, adorned with an Egyptian hairstyle. This hairstyle first appears in Cypriot sculpture in the beginning of the 6th century BCE. The sculpture was most likely dedicated as a votive to the goddess, and other sculptural fragments that were excavated from the sanctuary indicate that they were made by the same workshop or artist. These other sculptural examples are currently located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the Cesnola Collection.
