Ceramic Lamp

This lamp shape is a good representation of the “echinus” typology, which includes a deep oval body and has a long nozzle. The decorative elements include concentric half circles in relief filled in with dots, and double rows of dots fill the spaces between the groups of half circles. Usually, a palmette also decorates the nozzle. The lamp is made out of micaceous clay, and there are traces of red ochre on the slip. Most of the “echinus” type lamps from Karanis date to the 3rd century CE and are remarkably homogeneous in size and decoration. This typology existed over many centuries, and it has even been found in many places outside of Egypt such as Athens, Delos, and Antioch. Similar examples include KM 0000.02.2210 and KM 0000.02.2211.

The downloadable files are in an .STL format which is optimal for 3D printing. We suggest using a free software such as Meshmixer to edit the file to your needs.
