Bes figurine

Bes is an Egyptian deity who protects young children and mothers. He is commonly depicted as a squat man with a roaring lion’s head or similar exaggerated facial features. Large eyes and a snarling mouth to scare away anything that might harm a child. This figurine is made of Egyptian faience, a ceramic-like material that vitrefies (becomes glass-like) when fired at high temperatures. This particular figurine was found during the UM excavations at Karanis and is a particular staff favorite for his rather “cute” yet still fearsome appearance. 

The downloadable files are in an .STL format which is optimal for 3D printing. We suggest using a free software such as Meshmixer to edit the file to your needs. Some objects may need supports added or should be hollowed out for the most efficient printing. Any questions about 3D printing should be directed to kelsey.disko.project@umich.edu.
