Description

This ceramic figurine depicts Bes, the ancient Egyptian god known for his role as a defender and protector. In this representation, Bes assumes the form of a warrior with distinct leonine and human features. Bes, considered one of the “domestic deities,” was tasked with safeguarding households and families, particularly women and children. This depiction emphasizes his role as a fearsome defender, ready to ward off any threats. The figurine captures Bes’ distinct attributes, including his hybrid form with a wrinkled brow, protruding tongue, and a lion’s ears, mane, and tail. The figurine’s rear side features a maker’s mark stamp reading “ΣΙΜΟΥ,” (of Simos) indicating the name of the craftsman or workshop responsible for its creation.
