Description

This is a small marble head of a young child. The marble is large-grained, which is often associated with the island of Paros. Unfortunately, the head is severely damaged, and around ¼ of it is missing. Nevertheless, the soft smile of the child is a common depiction in early Hellenistic sculpture. It has been suggested by John G. Pedley that this statue is an example of an arktoi, children who impersonated bears in the festival in honor of Artemis at Brauron. For more information on this object, see “Two Greek Heads in Ann Arbor” by John G. Pedley.
