Description

Canopic jars were originally used to hold the embalmed organs of mummified deceased. After Dynasty XXI, however, there was a shift in funerary practices towards replacing the organs into a special cavity within the mummy. Then, canopic jars became more symbolic and were placed in the burial chambers, empty if hollowed out at all. This “fake” jar was made from a solid block of plaster. A roughly incised ring symbolically marks the division point between stopper and jar since there is no actual separation. These fake canopic jars were made from about Dynasty XXII through the Roman Period. In the Late Period, a great variety of sculpture styles and jar profiles are used.

The downloadable files are in an .STL format which is optimal for 3D printing. We suggest using a free software such as Meshmixer to edit the file to your needs. Some objects may need supports added or should be hollowed out for the most efficient printing. Any questions about 3D printing should be directed to kelsey.disko.project@umich.edu.
